Dear Petr:
I would bet that storing hydrogen in metals is not really
a candidate for powering cars by hydrogen but rather represents
some chemists having fun at public expense. The likely approach
is to bite the bullet and face the difficulties of handling liquid
hydrogen. It is three time better than gasoline by weight and
three times worse by volume, and this is tolerable.
Unfortunately, there is no scientific constituency for liquid hydrogen.
Making it safely usable promises to be a long, expensive and unglamorous
process unpunctuated by striking discoveries. I am afraid that
the desire to make use of a scientific discovery, when it is undiluted
by conscience is one of the factors distorting energy research.
Of course, this is nowhere near as bad as the situation in
solar energy where it seems to me that Denis Hayes is striving to
become the American Lysenko.
